The year just keeps getting better and better for architecture firm Design International, with the latest success being the honour of winning the prestigious ‘Future Project 2016’ award at last night’s Global RLI Awards, with Kingdom City Mall in Jeddah. With the magnificent setting of The Natural History Museum, one of London’s most famous landmarks, the Global RLI Awards gives the opportunity to celebrate the very best projects in the world of retail and leisure.
Gathering around the famous Diplodocus dinosaur fossil in The Natural History Museum’s main hall, Design International fought off tough competition to take home the prestigious award, which rewards the most innovative and successful projects and firms within the industry.
To the judging panel, Kingdom City Mall demonstrated superior architectural excellence, as well as ground-breaking innovation, giving it the edge over the other entries in the category. The mall sits at the foot of Jeddah Tower, a skyscraper in Saudi Arabia, which will be the tallest building in the world. The unique design assumes the conceptual theory of an inverted tower, and instead of the mass rising to the sky, it creates a void descending in the form of a valley.
Arch. Davide Padoa and CEO of Design International said,
“We are truly delighted to have won the RLI ‘Future Project 2016’ Award. I personally take it as a good indicator that the industry is fast evolving and that Design International will have an important role to play.”
The evening was especially memorable for the team at Design International, with another of their designs, Ankara Park City in Turkey receiving the ‘Highly Commended’ place in the same category.
Mr Padoa continued,
“We are also thrilled that Ankara Park City has been Highly Commended for the RLI ‘Future Project 2016’ Award. This award, together with Kingdom City Mall in Jeddah, marks our commitment to push design boundaries forward within the retail real estate industry.”
This fantastic double triumph puts the spotlight again on Davide Padoa and his firm Design International, who recently celebrated the opening of Il Centro in Milan; the largest shopping centre in Italy and one of the most avant-garde pieces of architecture in Europe.
