A destination of choice: Riverside Bedford

Bedford Riverside Regeneration Limited a joint venture between Coplan Estates and Linkcity, in partnership with Bedford Borough Council has completed Bedford Riverside North, a £40m mixed-use town centre scheme that has repositioned Bedford as an exciting retail and leisure destination.

Located on the picturesque River Great Ouse and Victoria Park, the site was originally a cattle market, later it became a brewery and then in the 1960’s, a council owned car park and office buildings.

Bedford Council recognised an exceptional strategic opportunity for a mixed-use development and took the decision to see a development partner to create the best solution for this unique site that would inject fresh life and energy to the area. Following an intensive OJEU process, Bedford Riverside Regeneration Limited was selected to bring forward a retail and leisure led  scheme.

The final development comprises:

  • 12 retail/restaurants units (Bella Italia, Millar & Carter , Zizzi, Mexico, Coal Bar & Grill, Wagamamas, GBK, Loungers and Anytime Fitness)
  • Seven screen Vue cinema
  • 100 bed Premier Inn hotel
  • Micro brewery
  • 66 residential riverside apartments (tenures ranging from one to three bedrooms)
  • New town square and footbridge over the river

The residential element of the development targeted both first time buyers and people looking to down-size. The speed of sales was unprecedented in Bedford which is a reflection of the location and its excellent rail links to London as well as the quality of the scheme.

An important objective for Bedford Riverside North was to capitalise on the river and embracing it as part of the town. The plethora of restaurants has ensured that the footfall has increased substantially and is a vibrant, safe and pleasant place to visit.

Bedford Borough Mayor, Dave Hodgson, said:

“Riverside Bedford is key to our vision for a town centre which is attractive not only for retail but also leisure, culture, food and drink and more.  It has already established itself as a destination of choice, and is supporting increased footfall in our town centre.”
