When SureSet were first contracted for the resin bound paving aspect of this £2.94m restoration project the pool surround was specified as red.
But during extensive excavations at the pool Cornish Greenstone was discovered. Although Greenstone has been traced back to the Penzance area, the exact quarry has never been identified, it’s believed to have been a place called the Gear – a rock now submerged half a mile from the shore at Penzance.
SureSet were sent samples of the excavated Greenstone for colour matching. Once the exact colour blend had been agreed with their customer, SureSet colour coated 33,000kg of recycled glass in the bespoke blend of Pool Green.
As one of the last trades on the site SureSet laid 1363m² of resin bound paving on 20 May 2016 – just eight days before Jubilee Pool reopened to the public.
Even though plenty of new technologies have been utilised in this restoration project such as heating with geothermal energy and permeable paving, Jubilee Pool has maintained its Art Deco personality.
- Recycled Glass: 3mm bespoke Pool Green
- Application: pool surround
- Area: 1363m²
- Base: concrete
- Depth: 18mm
- Edging: aluminium
- Installed: February 2016
Having opened to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of George V, Jubilee Pool is one of the few remaining lidos in the country and has been an iconic feature of the Penzance seafront for more than 80 years.
The Jubilee Pool had to close in 2014 following significant storm damage and CORMAC carried out essential structural repairs totalling £2.94m during 2015/16. Restoration work on this architecturally important and much loved lido included:
- Anchoring the pool floor to the rock bed
- Repairing external walls and structure
- Stabilising and repairing the terraces and changing rooms
- Replacing the hand rails
- Upgrading the pool drainage and electrical systems
- Resurfacing the pool surround.
