The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced an extensive programme of new CPD events for the 2014 Autumn and Winter period.
Highlights of the calendar include a bespoke tour of selected London auction houses, an insider view of the BLOC Hotel at Gatwick Airport, the latest in the Big Debate series on ‘Finding New Clients’ and the CDM Update seminar evening.
‘The Interior Designer’s Guide to Buying At Auction’ will be delivered on Tuesday 7thOctober 2014 by specialist art tour guide Anthony Thompson, who presided over the Islamic department at Christies for over a decade. The tour will take in leading London sale rooms, providing the opportunity to learn about their history and operation. By analysing auctions in progress, a select group of designers will be educated in the legal aspects of buying and selling at auction, in addition to learning about the bidding process and auctioneer selling style.
Next in the ‘Private View’ series organised by the Institute is a private tour of the brand-new BLOC Hotel, located at Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal, on Thursday 2nd October 2014. The Private View series aims to provide an insight into innovative and award-winning interior design projects. The tour will be led by Colin Graham, Director of BoxBuild and mastermind behind the hotel chain. Colin will talk attendees through the unique hotel concept of high-spec rooms at very low rates, and the design process, from start to finish. The exclusive members-only event has been organised by supplier to the BLOC Hotel Gatwick and BIID Industry Partner, Roca Ltd.
Caroline Kilgour, of Roca, outlined:
“We hope to provide an insight into what is a ‘game-changing’ hotel.”
“‘Intelligently engineered,’ BLOC offers something new to the UK hotel market, a new kind of budget boutique. Roca is delighted to give BIID members the opportunity to learn about the concept, design and creativity behind the brand.”
A further important discussion for designers will take place during the CDM Update in November. The seminar evening, led by experienced Health and Safety consultant William Flint, will cover the major changes in Construction Design and Management Regulations coming into force in 2015. An audience Q&A will allow attendees to address questions of keeping both designers and clients safe. In an increasingly litigious world, it is essential for designers to keep up-to-date with regulation changes such as these involving a greater degree of designer responsibility.
Finally, taking place in December, and a highly-anticipated follow on from last year’s sold-out event on Fees and Getting Paid, The Big Debate on Finding New Clients will focus on one of the fundamental challenges facing interior designers, particularly those starting out in their career. Set to be another evening of lively exchange of opinion, the debate will again be chaired by BIID President Daniel Hopwood and will also feature CPD Director, Susie Rumbold, as a panellist. The Big Debate series has proven to be both a productive and interactive forum, in which audience members are actively encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences.
