Development leads the field with Kingspan pipe insulation

Kingspan Industrial Insulation Ltd’s Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System has been installed as part of a multi-million pound education and sports development in South Wales, helping the project towards its goal of BREEAM ‘Excellent’.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s £50m redevelopment of the Ynys site in Aberdare combines a ‘super-school’, with capacity for 1600 students, and high quality indoor and outdoor sports facilities, including a state-of-the-art leisure centre which will be used as training centre for the National Diving Development Centre for Wales. Laing O’Rourke oversaw the phased construction programme, with the new leisure centre completed before the existing building was demolished.

Both Aberdare Community School and Sobell Leisure Centre have been pre-assessed to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and the Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System helped contribute, directly and indirectly, to the award of these ratings. Atkins specified the premium performance system for hot and cold service pipework within both buildings.

With thermal conductivities as low as 0.025W/m·K, the Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System is the most thermally efficient commonly used pipe insulation. This performance helps to limit heat transference to or from the pipework, minimising energy demand, a key factor in the BREEAM assessment.

Managing site waste was another central concern and to help limit this, the Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System was supplied in re-usable boxes which can be used several times over with an accompanying empty crate. When the boxes were emptied of product, they were simply folded down and placed into the crate. The crate was then collected when the next delivery was made and theprocess was then repeated. The Kooltherm® FM System’s excellent thermal efficiency also meant the thickness of pipe insulation was minimised, limiting the volume of product that was required to complete the work.

Project manager, Adrian Bourne from Laing O’Rourke commented:

“We worked with Kingspan Industrial Insulation because of their willingness to trial new methods for reducing waste with reusable boxes. Kingspan Industrial Insulation were engaged in the process from concept stage through to on-site implementation, helping to ensure that the process ran as smoothly as possible”.

Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation was installed on the project by Linear Insulation Ltd. The product holds a highest possible Green Guide Summary Rating of A+, and is manufactured to a BS EN ISO 14001:2004 scheme, qualifying for the Responsible Sourcing credit within the BREEAM assessment. In addition, the Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System is the first pipe insulation product to attain BDA Agrement® certification under the scheme. It is also is the only pipe insulation to hold a national LABC Warranty and LABC Registered Detail; this can help to streamline the Building Control checking and approvals process, saving project costs and time.

The Kingspan Kooltherm® FM Pipe Insulation System is available as a freely downloadable BIM object from either www.kingspanindustrialinsulation.com or the BIMStore website.

In addition to its free Pipeline Technical Advisory Service which can be contacted on 0808 1687363, Kingspan Industrial Insulation has now also launched Premier and Premier Plus Services. These services support purchases of Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation and the Kooltherm FM Complete Pipe Insulation System (incorporating insulated pipe support inserts and Kooltherm FireSleeves) respectively, delivering clear advice and guidance at every stage in a project, from the initial specification, to site visits and certification.
