Elite Systems launches emergency homeless accommodation module

Bespoke modular construction specialist Elite Systems has launched a new modular building designed to help local authorities tackle homelessness.

Recent figures from UK charity Shelter showed that 62,280 homeless families are living in temporary accommodation, of which 5,400 are living in emergency B&Bs and hostels where they have to share facilities, and often sleep in a single room. The issue has been further highlighted by the COVID-19 outbreak.

In response Elite Systems’ technical team developed a modular accommodation product that is designed to provide high-quality accommodation for homeless people and offer local authorities a speedy solution, with the company able to produce the modules within a matter of weeks.

The concept provides a blueprint for a safe, comfortable single-storey home comprising a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen/living space. The module is based on Elite Systems’ LABC-approved modular house; the single module version is fully relocatable, offering local authorities plenty of flexibility, and the design can also be configured as a larger complex for community or family use.

Where the local authority specifies photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, the emergency accommodation concept has the option of being net zero carbon, and with the addition of ‘powerwall’ solutions, the building can even incorporate features like electric bike charge points, providing those living in the building with a means of active transport and improving their chances of gaining employment.

Like all of Elite Systems’ buildings, the accommodation is constructed in the company’s specialist factory, before being installed and finished on-site, with Elite able to offer a full turnkey service that includes design, groundworks, build, delivery and installation of fixtures and fittings.

The factory build process means that the project can progress whatever the weather, and Elite’s ability to create bespoke modular buildings allows for a freedom of design and the ability to match the building to the available space, meaning that local authorities can make good use of existing brownfield sites.
