A striking new identity has been given to the Students’ Union building at the University of Sheffield using Aluglaze insulated panels from Sheffield-based architectural panel manufacturer Panel Systems.
Polyester powder coated aluminum was specified in grey to provide a stylish exterior for the Students’ Union building, which was one of the first glass curtain walled buildings in the world when it was built over 50 years ago.
The new facade plays a major part in bringing the existing building up to modern standards of energy efficiency. Panel Systems supplied 260m2 of aluminium faced panels, which will help to reduce the building’s energy consumption and carbon footprint. This is due to the panel’s insulating foam core, which means it achieves a U value of 0.17 W/m2K. Panels can be supplied in different thicknesses to achieve U values as low as 0.15 W/m2K.
Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said:
“Aluglaze panels are often specified where a striking, contemporary aesthetic is desired, as was the case with this project. The insulating Styrofoam core ensures excellent thermal performance and the panels for Sheffield Student’s Union were manufactured specifically to ensure a high level of energy efficiency for the building.”
A premium quality panel, Aluglaze is typically specified when aesthetic considerations are paramount and is available in all Interpon D, Syntha Pulvin & Anodisied colours. A PPC coating was applied to the panels produced for Sheffield Students’ Union to give a prolonged life span for the colour finish, ensuring that the building retains its striking aesthetics for years to come.
The panels were manufactured using Panel Systems’ bespoke grooved edge detail which allowed the panels to be incorporated into a toggle fix glazing system. Panel Systems’ bespoke service means that Aluglaze can be designed for specific glazing systems, to meet the required performance criteria.
The £20m refurbishment has included better equipped areas for student services, an amphitheatre-style space for special events, more social and study areas and a new restaurant which is open to the public as well as students and University staff.
Aluglaze panels from Panel Systems have been supplied to a wide variety of commercial, educational and healthcare environments and they are renowned for their aesthetics and performance.
Panel Systems manufactures a full range of bespoke composite panels that are used to create aesthetically striking and thermally efficient buildings.
