Blackfriars station opened in 1886 and in 2008 was the subject of an extensive £350 million redevelopment project. The original building was remodelled, the platform extended across the river and a new entrance built on the south bank.
A new bridge provides direct access to London’s Bankside and South Bank tourist areas such as the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern. Jacobs Architects specified FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation as its unique cellular structure is vapour tight, totally non-combustible and can withstand exceptionally high compressive forces. FOAMGLAS T4+ slabs were used extensively to insulate floors and stairs in the North Station. Taking full advantage of its low co-efficient of expansion and high compressive strength, it was cold adhesive-bonded to the concrete and a separating layer applied prior to application of the floor screed. FOAMGLAS will not move or deflect under load so the floor screed is not at risk of cracking under the weight of 44,000 passengers who travel through the station each day.
FOAMGLAS T4+ Tapered slabs were used for the roof to provide drainage falls. Using ‘in house’ CAD, FOAMGLAS designed a bespoke tapered insulation system for the 1,500 m2 flat roof, the material being cold adhesive-bonded to the concrete and profiled metal roof structures.
FOAMGLAS W+F insulation was used extensively within the North and South bank station interiors, behind metal panelling to the ticketing areas, sandstone cladding and blockwork cavity walls. Externally, W+F slab insulation was installed in a similar way with the feature sandstone façade alongside the North entrance, sized to match the individual dimensions of each block and fixing points.
