Fusing two into one…

Fusing of natural ventilation and heat recovery principles into one is being given greater capacity with the evolution of Gilberts Blackpool’s latest concept.

Gilberts- Britain’s leading air movement specialist- is extending its new Mistrale Fusion Series (MFS) range with the introduction of a high capacity version, to compliment the core MFS128 unit, which transfers 128l/s of fresh air/unit, mainly naturally, into a building.

The new MFS256 delivers double the airflow capacity in one, larger unit. Thus, the number of penetrations through the building facade –be it wall or window– is halved. The high capacity version still delivers all the performance criteria of the MFS range: providing a dynamic hybrid natural ventilation solution that uses occasional eco fan assistance to maintain comfort conditions and meet, or exceed, current regulations for ventilation, air quality and noise.

Installed in a window or wall, Gilberts’ MFS draws fresh air using natural air movement principles through a louvre into the core unit. A mixing damper within modulates airflow to allow the new, fresh air to mix with the warm exhaust air, thus extracting its heat without the need for an exchanger, and without risk of cross-contamination. An integrated low energy fan energises on requirement, eg during poor air movement conditions, to blend the internal air, ensuring an even distribution of airflow, with control over temperature and CO2 levels within, and maintenance of a comfortable internal environment for occupants.

MFS’ regular flowrate ensures compliance with Department for Education guidelines2; the system can be boosted (the standard 128 up to 160l/s and the high capacity 256 up to 320l/s respectively), and still be within acoustic limitations, to maintain adequate ventilation in hotter environments such as computer suites.

The MFS range achieves air leakage better than legislative requirements- 5m3/HR/m². It achieves a U value of 1W/m2/°C. Further, Gilberts testing predicts operating costs of less than £5/classroom/annum1.

“The high capacity version is inevitably larger dimensionally; it requires a wider break in the façade and projects further into the internal space. The choice of two Standard or one High Capacity unit comes down primarily to individual preference,” observes Gilberts’ Sales Director Ian Rogers.

Gilberts MFS is the latest solution the company has developed as part of its strategy to engineer practical, energy efficient cooling and ventilation products to accommodate the evolving demands of modern building.

Founded 50+ years ago, privately owned Gilberts is unique in having its own, on-site (85,000ft²) manufacturing facility, producing engineered solutions, with an in-house test centre. Technical expertise is supported with full in-house testing addressing air movement and combining with computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
