Over this summer, timber engineers James Jones & Sons Ltd, Timber Systems Division have been involved in the supply of the roof structure at Dundee University’s innovative Macro Micro Studio project, based at the city’s Botanical Gardens.
The Macro Micro Project is a 50m2 Passivehaus structure, designed and built by 5th year Masters students from Dundee University’s Department of Architecture, whose aim is to showcase ultra-low energy technologies and self-build practices suitable for use in Scotland.
Following a visit earlier in the year from students and tutors to James Jones’ factory in Forres, where the Dundee team saw joist manufacture in progress and discussed technical aspects of their project, James Jones has supplied 252 lm of their UK-manufactured, FSC registered JJI-Joists and 19 lm of JJ beam for the Studio’s roof.
The roof structure is now complete, and Stephen Stewart of James Jones, said:
“We’ve been working with the team at Dundee for some time now and it’s great to see the roof up and the whole build progressing so well. We’re delighted to be able to support such an excellent, innovative project and were particularly pleased to see the students incorporate some aspects of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the design – something we at James Jones are also embracing.”
Once the project is complete, scheduled for later this year, the Studio and its technologies will be tested in a real-world situation. The space will be open to the public to showcase the technologies involved to both housing providers and home owners, and the ultimate aim is to develop a new, market-applicable approach for low-energy building in Scotland.
