Keppie appointed to design new medical facility

Leading architectural practice Keppie has been appointed to design a new medical practice in Yoker, Glasgow, on behalf of Medical Centres Scotland.

The facility, which will house both a GP and dentist service, will be located on a prominent corner site at the junction of Dumbarton Road and Ellerslie Road in Yoker. Construction is just about to commence and is expected to complete by autumn 2014.

The much-sought-after new community practice will provide a series of consulting rooms, treatment facilities and dental surgeries together with staff spaces and a reception.

In order to highlight the civic nature of the building as well as provide a shared and sheltered enclosure that unifies the entrance of the two surgeries, a series of columns will form the Dumbarton Road frontage. The modest building will be constructed through a simple palette of brick and concrete with aluminium framed glazing.

David Ross, design director at Keppie, commented:

“This is an important project for the community and one that we’re very pleased to be involved in. We’ve got a lot of experience in the medical sector so we know exactly what works in terms of the design. We’ll be using this know-how throughout the construction phase to bring our creation to life.”

Keppie is designing the practice on behalf of Medical Centres Scotland (MCS), which has a long track record of developing and investing in healthcare premises. David Shannon, director at MCS and responsible for the Yoker project, said:

“It is great news that this much needed community facility has got to the construction phase. It will, we believe, transform both the patient experience and the working environment for the healthcare professionals who will be based there.”
