Kingspan Optim-R takes school to the next level

When a rise in the local population forced Caldmore Community Primary School to double its intake of pupils, architects at Walsall Council were faced with the challenge of extending the building in the already limited school grounds. Kingspan OPTIM-R formed a key part of their solution, ensuring a smooth transition from the first storey classrooms to an outdoor “play deck”, without compromising either space or thermal performance in the rooms below.

The new two storey extension has been constructed on a steep embankment between the playing fields and the school, this allows the lower level classrooms to open directly out onto the playing fields whilst the floor level of the first storey rooms matches those in the existing school building. The ‘play deck’ sits on the roof of the lower level corridors and ancillary rooms and to minimise heatloss from these rooms without exceeding the height threshold of the classroom floors, a Kingspan OPTIM-R Roofing System was specified along with tapered Kingspan Styrozone H 350.

Unlike conventional insulation products, Kingspan Insulation’s OPTIM-R vacuum insulation panels feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope. This allows them to deliver optimum levels of thermal performance from a minimal product thickness, with a thermal conductivity as low as 0.007 W/m.K.

Stoneleigh Services installed 30mm Kingspan OPTIM-R panels above a vapour control layer on the concrete roof slab and a further layer of tapered Kingspan Styrozone H 350, in thicknesses from 30 mm to 160 mm, was then laid above this. This layer of tapered insulation ensures effective drainage of surface water which filters through a porous rubber play surfacing. The build-up delivers outstanding thermal performance with a final U-value of just 0.16 W/m².K.

Construction of the extension was carried out whilst the school remained in full operation and the completed building provides eight additional classrooms along with a hall and meeting spaces.
