Phaidon and the Design Museum have announced a new partnership to promote design and contemporary architecture to a global audience.
This unique collaboration encompasses book-publishing, events with the world’s most influential artists, chefs, writers and thinkers, and a Phaidon retail presence online and at the Design Museum.
The partnership is announced as the Design Museum confirmed 24 November 2016 as the opening date for its new home in the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, following 25 years at Shad Thames. Designer and Phaidon author John Pawson will transform the existing Grade II listed building to create new galleries and retail, catering and event spaces.
James Booth-Clibborn, Managing Director, Phaidon, said:
“We are delighted to be partnering with the Design Museum at this hugely important moment in its history. The partnership will go beyond a simple publishing agreement to bring an additional dimension to Phaidon’s business through joint promotional and content-sharing initiatives. And, for the first time, Phaidon will be associated with a permanent physical space, in which we will host events with the Design Museum and other external partners. This partnership will strengthen both organisations’ ability to bring the story of contemporary design and architecture to an international audience.”
Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum and Phaidon author, said:
“Phaidon’s reputation for publishing excellent books on every aspect of design, art, fashion, food and architecture makes them a perfect partner for the Design Museum as we grow in size and ambition. Their range of subject matter reflects the museum’s own interest in opening up dialogues about the importance of design in our lives and we very much look forward to working with them to create definitive and thought-provoking titles.”
The partnership will combine Phaidon’s expertise in commissioning and producing books on art, photography, design, architecture, fashion, food, travel and illustrated books for children and the Design Museum’s reputation for creating world-class exhibitions.
From concept to production, Phaidon will work in close collaboration with the museum’s curatorial team to publish a guide to the Design Museum, as well as exhibition publications to accompany its two annual headline shows.
The first three books, available from November 2016, are Designer Maker User: An Introduction to Design, The Design Museum and Fear & Love: Reactions to a Complex World.
