A combination of insulation products from Sto Ltd has been used to provide a robust external wall insulation system for a new rugby club building in Scotland. StoTherm Classic K external wall insulation, Sto Armat Classic reinforcing mortar and StoSilco façade render have been used on the new Canal Parks Rugby Club Pavilion building in Inverness.
In order to provide effective thermal performance, the project was required to achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K.
“Sto is recognized as the market leader in insulation so it was an ideal choice for this project,”
comments Ross Whittaker of project architects Capita Symonds.
“Thermal performance was not the only requirement though. The nature of the building means that it might be subject to impact from sports balls, and the pavilion also stands in a fairly isolated location where there is the potential for vandalism. The cement-free composition of the reinforcing coat offered the impact resistance, ruggedness and resistance to cracking that were equally important considerations. Sto also worked closely with us and their input helped to ensure a successful end result.”
The StoTherm Classic K system provides outstanding thermal insulation and market-leading impact resistance of 60 joules. This is up to 10 times greater than similar cementitious systems and so was the ideal choice for the rugby club environment where it might be subject to impact. The thoroughly proven system was fixed to the pavilion walls using StoLevell Uni mineralic reinforcing mortar, which allowed for fast, easy and secure installation.
Bill Smith of G & R Ross, who installed the Sto system, adds:
“The Sto system is straightforward to install, and it allowed us to accommodate any areas of detailing that were required. The surfaces were finished with StoSilco K silicone resin render to create a high level of water repellence, providing resistance to the growth of algae and fungus. This will help the pavilion retain its attractive appearance.”

The creation of the Canal Parks Pavilion formed part of the recently opened Inverness West Link Stage 1 Project.
