University tools up with Kingspan TEK®

The University of Lancaster’s new flagship engineering building is designed to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating, thanks in part to the excellent thermal performance and airtightness provided by the Kingspan TEK® Cladding Panel.

The building, which has been designed by John McAslan + Partners, features two finger blocks either side of a stunning, four storey high atrium. It replaces the previous outdated facilities with new world class learning spaces, workshops and laboratories; and has been awarded a BREEAM interim score of 85.8.

The Kingspan TEK® Cladding Panel was bolted to the building’s concrete frame by RH Roofing & Cladding and forms the structural backing for the facility’s brick facade. The Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel comprises OSB/3 facing either side of a fibre-free, insulated core and can deliver U-values of 0.20 W/m².K or better.

The panels’ unique jointing system allowed air loss from the building to be kept to an absolute minimum. This was a key part of the facility’s energy efficient design and pressure testing on the completed building showed an air permeability of just 2.98 air changes per hour @ 50 Pa.

Ensuring a high level of fabric performance is essential for achieving the BREEAM Outstanding rating and the Kingspan TEK® Cladding Panel has helped deliver this. The panels are designed and cut to size before arriving onsite, improving installation speed and minimising construction waste. Main contractors Eric Wright Construction oversaw completion of the Engineering department’s new home in time for the start of the January term.

The Kingspan TEK® Cladding Panel is produced at a Kingspan manufacturing facility which carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification. In addition, the blowing agent used in the production of the insulated core has a zero Ozone Depletion Potential and a Global Warming Potential of less than 5.

The building also provides extensive chemical engineering facilities, high quality research facilities for marine renewable energy, hydropower rigs and nuclear laboratories. The project has won three regional awards from the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects).
