WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff appointed by HS2 Ltd for phase 2 railway systems on the professional services consultants framework

Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed to deliver railway systems designs and engineering for HS2 Phase 2 in a contract worth c.£15 million over five years.

Its work begins immediately on the first 50 miles of track from Birmingham to Crewe (known as package 2a).

A multidisciplinary team of engineers and planners from WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s UK offices will provide railway systems services, including engineering design, construction planning, operations planning, expert advice, detailed modelling, systems engineering and assurance.

This appointment follows WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s role as railway systems consultant on Phase 1 of the project where it provided rail systems design and development work and helped HS2 Ltd to deposit a hybrid Bill to Parliament within just 18 months.

HS2 will feature 400m-long trains that operate at speeds of up to 360kph – amongst the fastest operating speeds in Europe. Using a series of models the consultancy demonstrated that the high capacity and speeds demanded of the railway can be realised without compromising on sustainability and passenger comfort and safety. For instance, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff developed a design that allows 98 per cent of train braking energy to be regenerated in order to reduce the carbon footprint.

Darren Reed, head of rail at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, said:

“Our appointment is testament to the quality of the work delivered by our team for HS2 Phase 1, where we designed a safe, affordable and maintainable high-speed rail system that integrates effectively with the existing rail network.

“We will build on this success and use our extensive international high-speed rail expertise to deliver a design for Phase 2 that supports HS2’s vision of a world-leading, transformational rail system that will bring lasting benefits for many generations.”

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has successfully worked on high profile rail projects, from environmental and feasibility studies to engineering, construction management and commissioning, around the world; including the Cologne-Rhine Main Line, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan High Speed Rail, Taiwan High Speed Rail, Zheng-Xi High-Speed Rail, Hefei-Fuzhou High speed rail, and is currently working on California High Speed Rail and on a new HS2 interchange at Old Oak Common.
