Eliminating fatbergs one grease trap at a time…

In 2020 Yorkshire Water alone tackled more than 25,000 sewer blockages (source: WWT). Replicate that across the other ten water and sewage companies and the national figure is likely to be well over ten times more.

Problems in the sewer network are most often caused by foreign objects, such as wet wipes, being flushed down toilets and fats, oils and greases (FOGS) being poured down drains. These can develop into large blockages, such as fatbergs, that prevent sewage flowing through the network to wastewater treatment works.

One solution for commercial operations is the installation of grease traps in kitchen environments. It is actually a legal requirement, but low take-up suggests a lack of awareness both of the regulation and of the solutions.

Saniflo, the market leader for pumps and macerators, has been installing commercial pumping solutions to deal with kitchen waste water for decades and has recognised the issue. The company has launched a range of grease traps that can be marketed alongside – or independent of – the kitchen pump range.

Three options that cover all commercial kitchen sizes have been produced:
