Masonry materials have been used to create buildings for centuries. However, with increasingly strict regulations around fire safety, there is a need for passive fire solutions specifically for masonry projects.
In addition to standard cavity barriers and firestops, Siderise has developed a number of passive fire protection solutions designed to overcome some of the trickier issues for this application.
For example, decorative offset bricks are a common design choice, particularly around windows or doors to add interest or to break up large elevations. However, these create an inconsistent cavity depth which is difficult to seal off effectively. For straightforward applications, it may be possible to notch a standard full-fill barrier, so it fills the cavity, or to place a board into the gap to flatten out the irregularity. But a more innovative approach is to use an intumescent barrier, especially for more complex brick patterns. The Siderise EWI Horizontal Cavity Barriers contain an intumescent material that is activated at a critical temperature (typically around 130°C), causing it to expand to meet and mould to the face of the outer construction, forming a robust seal across the gap. Projecting balconies are also a common sight on masonry buildings, but they have historically lacked a standard tested approach for firestopping around the thick steel brackets. To resolve this, Siderise Balcony Bracket (BB) has been specifically designed and tested to fully enclose and protect balcony brackets, preventing them from heating up and thereby simplifying this complex detail.
