Discover how Carron Heating helped transform a once-derelict Georgian country house into an award-winning home, delivering heritage-led heating solutions compatible with modern renewable energy systems.
For decades, Townhead stood empty. Built in 1732 in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley, the Grade II listed Georgian country house had fallen into disrepair, its once-grand interiors waiting to be brought back to life.
When restoration began, it wasn’t simply about repairing the structure. It was about bringing life back into the building, respecting its past while making it ready for modern living. Every decision carried weight, including how it would be heated.
Carron Heating became part of that story, working alongside the project team to supply cast iron radiators throughout the home. More than 80 radiators were carefully specified, each selected to suit the proportions and purpose of its room, from expansive living spaces to quieter, more intimate corners.
Cast iron was the natural choice. Its timeless form reflected the building’s Georgian heritage, while its thermal performance ensured lasting, even warmth. Just as importantly, it worked in harmony with the property’s ground source heating system, supporting an efficient, sustainable future without compromising historic integrity.
Rather than feeling like an addition, the radiators became part of the architecture itself, settling naturally into their surroundings, as though they had always belonged there.
Today, Townhead lives again. Its rooms are warm, its character intact, and its story continuing. The project’s success was recognised with a Georgian Society award, celebrating the careful balance between conservation and innovation.
Townhead stands as a reminder that the right heating does more than warm a space, it helps restore a building’s soul, ensuring it can be lived in and loved for generations to come.
