Lancaster University’s School of Architecture has gained a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) seal of approval for key courses.
A panel representing the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have granted full and unconditional validation (Part 1) to the BA (Hons) Architecture and Candidate Course status to the Master of Architecture course at Lancaster University.
The panel, made up of several UK experts in architectural practice and academia, reviewed student work, course structures and school facilities over two days.
Speaking on the success of the visit, head of architecture Des Fagan said:
“This is an excellent outcome which arrives soon after our astounding and outstanding National Student survey (NSS) results last month, which saw the course placed number 1 in all 65 UK schools in more than half the NSS questions.
“The RIBA panel were incredibly positive on the potential of our school to become a leading light in the field of International Architectural education.”
The RIBA commended the School of Architecture in three areas:
- The staff, for their commitment to creating an excellent student experience, through a nurturing, student-centred approach
- The student society, the Lancaster Student Society of Architects (LSSA), for their pro-active approach to helping establish the collegiality of this new school, particularly their mentoring scheme
- The appointment of high calibre, dedicated and ambitious staff
Third year BA (Hons) Architecture student and President of the Lancaster Student Society of Architects Alexi Reader said of the visit:
“It is an amazing feeling, seeing the efforts of the staff and students, who make the school what it is, pay off.
“I am overjoyed to see that the RIBA visitors recognised the work we have put in to help create a positive studio culture and connect everyone through the years.
“It’s been a great journey so far and I am excited to see what the future holds for the School of Architecture.”
Course Leader BA (Hons) Architecture and Director of Studies Ana Costa said:
“Building the School of Architecture has been an exciting and challenging journey!
“I am really proud of all the architecture students and staff that contributed with their enthusiasm and commitment for this great outcome.
“The foundations are laid down and I am looking forward to seeing the School of Architecture flourish.”
Megan Smith, a third year Year BA Student, said the success of the school has been a collaborative effort between staff and students:
“Developing a foundation for radical creativity and research to take place, putting students to be at the forefront of their projects and learning, to learn vital skills to become future architects,”
And the Director of Research at the School of Architecture, Professor Richard Brook, commented:
“Since my appointment a year ago I have been continually impressed by the care that the School and the University shows to its staff and students and it is wonderful to see this recognised by the RIBA.”
