Senior blends old and new at Doncaster’s Danum development

With its roots in South Yorkshire and a strong heritage spanning some 30 years, aluminium fenestration solutions provider Senior Architectural Systems has helped make local history by playing a key role in the construction of the new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in Doncaster.

Designed by leading architects Bond Bryan and built by main contractor Willmott Dixon, the new cultural and learning hub has been created following the sensitive restoration of four existing buildings.  A key focal point of the scheme, and one that looks even more dramatic at dusk, is the restored frontage of a former Victorian school which has been framed by Senior’s slimline SF52 aluminium curtain wall and showcased within a new steel-frame building.

The striking glazed façade, which was fabricated and installed by Senior’s supply chain partner Chemplas Ltd, also features Senior’s robust aluminium commercial doors.

As well as accentuating the architectural appeal of the former Doncaster High School for Girls, the scheme has been designed to provide a light, airy and welcoming space for the local community to explore some of the town’s heritage and previously unseen exhibits.

Benefiting from a strong yet slim aluminium frame, Senior’s SF52 curtain wall system was the ideal choice to minimise sightlines and provide exceptional views of the restored school building’s period features. The system’s enhanced thermal performance will also help boost the scheme’s overall energy-efficiency.

Available as a mullion drained system which removes the need for visible drainage slots, Senior’s SF52 curtain wall can be specified as capped, silicone sealed or as a combination of the two for even greater design flexibility. Thanks to Senior’s in-house powder coating facility, the SF52 system is available in an almost unlimited range of colours and finishes.
